THE TRACE
intervention, photo triptych, and video / Vis 2019
In 1964, on the twentieth anniversary of Josip Broz Tito's speech, a monument was set up on the Vis waterfront, the work of architect Neven Šegvic. From then until today we have had another war and we have set up new monuments. The monument "We don't want someone else's — we don't give our own" was removed in 1994 by the decision of the city authorities. Thus, the segment about the First Dalmatian Brigade, which had been carved into the stone monolith on the Vis waterfront for decades, was 'moved' to a new location. Cut into three pieces, it was left next to the football field on the outskirts of the town. This is one of the rare cases where the city government destroys the cultural property of the Republic of Croatia by the decision of the city council.
The part of the square where the monument used to be is still called 'at the monument'. Today, there is an ice cream stand 'at the monument'. In addition to the memory, there is a trace left behind the monument, a discrete irregularity in the geometry of the paving of the square. With this work, I pay tribute, not only to history but to a greater extent to the artistic work of my fellow architect and all the fallen monuments, which were supposed to remain in their positions and preserve the messages of their time.
